Position your phone in front of the TV so the camera can see the screen. Closer is better — the start lights should be big in the picture.
Line the start lights up inside the box on screen and hold the phone steady until it says "Locked on" — ideally before the first light comes on. You can draw your own box instead if you prefer.
Watch the TV, not your phone. When the lights go out, tap anywhere on the phone screen. Tap early and it's a jump start.
Why it's fair: the phone sees exactly the same picture you do, so your TV, stream or satellite delay cancels out. You're timed against the lights as they appear on your screen.
No race on? Practise on the lights at the top of this page: tap them (or press the space bar) the moment they go out. To rehearse your camera set-up, open lightsoutlive.com on a laptop or second screen and point your phone at its lights.
Leaderboards: every Grand Prix and Sprint gets its own board, and your finishing position on each one scores F1-style points towards a season championship. Only live starts count. Create a private league to race your friends. How scoring works
